About the Firm

The firm was initially founded in 1945 by Stuart Willoughby, at that time one of Kingston’s most well-respected criminal lawyers. Other past notable partners include Madam Justice Helen MacLeod. Today, the firm consists of Angus J. MacLeod and Bonnie R. Warkentin.

WMW has evolved over the past 60 years to meet the ongoing and changing needs of its clients. We provide advice in the areas of Estate Litigation, Wills and Estates, Family Law, Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice and Administrative Law. Because we are small, we are able to focus our energies on providing personalized and individual services in the manner that best serves our clients.

Angus J. MacLeod

After a career in computer systems design, Angus attended law school at Queen’s University and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1977. He was also a member of the Bar of the Northwest Territories from 1989–1998.

Angus’ practice for many years has been primarily in civil litigation with an emphasis on medical negligence. He also has a strong interest in public and administrative law. More recently he has expanded his practice to include Estate Litigation.

Angus acted for the Kingston Penitentiary Emergency Response Team in 1995 at the Arbour Inquiry into certain events at the Prison for Women. He also acted for the Correctional Officers from Kingston Penitentiary at the Gentles Inquest in 1998 and 1999, one of the longest inquests in Canadian history.

Angus was an original instructor with the Advocate’s Society Institute (now OCAT) and has instructed in advocacy training courses since 1988.

Angus is also a member of the Frontenac Law Association.

An accomplished bagpiper, Angus was a member of the Rob Roy Highland Pipe Band for several years.

Bonnie R. Warkentin

Born and raised in Manitoba, Bonnie received her B.A. (Hons) from the University of Winnipeg in 1983. After moving to Ontario, she earned her LL.B. from Queen’s University and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1991. Her practice consists of Estate Planning, Estate Litigation and Family Law (families in conflict). Bonnie is also a certified Mediator and Collaborative Family Law Lawyer. Bonnie has experience in conducting both mediation and arbitration matters.

Bonnie has been a Bencher with the Law Society of Upper Canada (the licensing and governing body of lawyers in Ontario) since 2003, and has served in a variety of leadership roles on a number of committees and task forces, most notably in the establishing of a regulated profession for Paralegals. She is currently the co-chair of the Retention of Women in Private Practice Project and the vice chair of both the Tribunals Committee and the Hearing Panel.

Bonnie is also a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Frontenac Law Association. In 2004, she received the Frontenac Law Association’s Award of Excellence.

Bonnie regularly speaks on topics related to estate planning, family law and issues of professional development. She is also actively involved in community services, including roles as Chair of the Board of Managers and Board of Trustees of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Bonnie and her husband are avid motorcyclists and have toured Greece, France, Morocco and many parts of Canada and the United States on their bikes.

Bonnie also devotes a significant amount of time to community service.
